We are pleased to present this year's Annual Municipal Water Quality Report, which provides a snapshot of last year's water quality. This report includes details about your water sources, contents, and how it compares to regulatory standards.

Our primary goal is to provide you with safe, reliable municipal water. We're committed to continuously improving our water treatment processes and protecting our water resources. We believe in keeping our customers informed about their water utility.

The water used by our system comes from surface water purchased from the City of Newton. Newton draws from two water sources: City Lake and Jacob Fork River.

The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducts Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) evaluations for all drinking water sources. These assessments determine each water supply's vulnerability to Potential Contaminant Sources (PCSs). Results include maps, background information, and susceptibility ratings (Higher, Moderate, or Lower).

City of Newton is currently monitoring for Cryptosporidium as required by the USEPA. Testing began October 2016 and continues through September 2018. Monthly samples are transported to Charlotte for analysis. No indication of this contaminant at detection levels has been found.

Cryptosporidium is a microbial pathogen found in surface waters nationwide. Though filtration removes it, standard filtration methods cannot guarantee 100% elimination. Ingestion may cause cryptosporidiosis, an abdominal infection causing nausea, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. While most healthy individuals recover within weeks, those with compromised immune systems, infants, children, and elderly people face higher risks of serious illness.

1. Why does my water usage seem unusually high? The meter readings may be difficult to interpret or transposed. You might have an undetected leaky toilet or faucet. Contact our office for assistance resolving this issue.
2. What should I do if experiencing low water pressure? First, check your meter and surrounding area for possible leaks. Then call our office to report low pressure in your vicinity.
3. Why is my water discolored? Recent repairs may have allowed air to enter the line, causing a milky appearance in your water.
4. What chemicals are added to our water supply? We only use chemicals approved by the National Safety Foundation specifically for municipal water treatment.
5. My water tastes, looks, or smells unusual. Is it safe? National regulations require maintaining minimum chlorine levels of 0.2 mg/L (tested at line endpoints). Systems using chloramine disinfectant must maintain 0.5 mg/L per state law. We test disinfectant levels daily to ensure safety.
6. Why do particles appear when running hot water? Your water heater likely needs flushing. CAUTION: Manufacturers typically recommend professional service to avoid injury or damage to your water heater. Consult your owner's manual if attempting this yourself.
7. Why do I have a previous balance when I sent my payment? We may have received it after the due date or perhaps not received it at all. Contact our office for assistance resolving this matter.
