North Carolina Water Utility Companies

The City of Greensboro maintains three primary surface water sources: Lake Higgins, Lake Brandt, and Lake Townsend. These reservoirs are situated in northern Guilford County within the upper Cape Fear River Basin in a protected watershed area. At full capacity, Greensboro's three water reservoirs hold approximately eight billion gallons of water.

Water from Lake Brandt undergoes treatment at the Mitchell Water Treatment Plant, while water from Lake Townsend is processed at the Townsend Water Treatment Plant. Lake Higgins serves as a supplementary source to replenish Lake Brandt when necessary.

In 2017, Greensboro's water system served roughly 287,027 residents with an average daily demand of 33.4 million gallons. During this period, the City of Greensboro purchased additional water from Burlington, Reidsville, Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority, and Winston-Salem. For Water Quality Reports from these systems, please contact: City of Burlington (336-222-5133), City of Reidsville (336-349-1070), Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority (336-498-5510), or City of Winston-Salem (336-945-1179).

Approximately 120 contaminants are regularly monitored in your water according to Federal and State regulations to ensure quality standards are met. The presence of detected substances does not necessarily indicate health risks, and all measurements remained below regulatory limits during the 2017 calendar year.
