Bladen County Water Dist-West Bladen Municipal Water Report Info

Welcome to Bladen County. Located in southeastern North Carolina's Coastal Plains region, Bladen County was originally settled by Highland Scots seeking religious freedom in 1734. Once North Carolina's largest county, it earned the nickname "Mother of Counties" because fifty-five counties were eventually carved from its original boundaries.

Now encompassing approximately 879 square miles, Bladen remains the state's fourth largest county. The area once contained over 1,000 lakes, believed to have formed from meteor impacts approximately 100,000 years ago. Seven of these unique lakes remain within current county boundaries, serving as popular recreational destinations and tourist attractions.

The climate features maritime influences in southeastern areas. While summer temperatures may occasionally reach 105°F and winter lows can dip to 10°F, these extremes are typically brief. The annual average temperature is 63°F with approximately 49.06 inches of yearly precipitation.

Natural recreation abounds throughout Bladen County. Three rivers flow through the region, with the Cape Fear River being the largest as it bisects the county. Excellent fishing opportunities exist countywide, while hunting is primarily limited to squirrel and deer. White Lake features commercial development attracting thousands of visitors annually. Bay Tree Lake offers private resort amenities, while Jones and Singletary Lakes are maintained as state parks.

The pleasant climate enables outdoor activities during nine months of the year. Bladen County maintains its traditional values while embracing future growth. The strong work ethic derived from the area's agricultural heritage has contributed to the success of over forty established industries in the region.

The county boasts diverse employment opportunities across food processing, manufacturing, assembly, textiles, chemicals, and agri-business sectors. An abundant labor pool combined with workforce training programs available through Bladen Community College supports both new and expanding industries.
