The Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune evolved from humble beginnings on a 144-acre parcel of marshland, sand hills, and wildlife. With World War II expanding across Europe, it became evident that facilities at Quantico and Parris Island were insufficient to meet the Marine Corps' growth plans for the east coast.
After thorough evaluation, the New River area of North Carolina was identified as the optimal location for a comprehensive Marine Division. On February 15, 1941, the Navy Department received approval to build what would become Camp Lejeune. The peninsula known as Hadnot Point was selected as the location for the original Naval Medical Center.
Construction began on March 13, 1942. By June, the first building was substantially completed and transferred to Captain T.L. Morrow, MC USN, the prospective Medical Officer in Command. On March 30, 1942, Chief Pharmacist V.M. Coulter reported to begin preparing orders for the extensive medical equipment and supplies needed.
The Naval Medical Center was officially commissioned on May 1, 1943, at a construction cost of $7.5 million. Initial staffing included 51 Officers, 90 Navy Nurses, 270 Navy Corpsmen, and 150 civilian employees. During WWII, the hospital reached its peak capacity of 2,087 patients, requiring beds in hallways and extensive use of double-deck bunks.
Through the decades, the medical center has responded to numerous crises, including the Korean War, the 1983 Beirut bombing, Operation Desert Storm, and modern conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2001, following the September 11 terrorist attacks, the hospital's operations were permanently altered as it adapted to support the Global War on Terrorism.
Today, Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune continues its proud tradition of service with approximately 240 Officers, 600 Sailors, over 1,000 civilians and contractors, and numerous dedicated volunteers providing critical healthcare services to military personnel and their families.
