I think I might have Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST) in my attic, but I'm uncertain. What action should I take?

Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST) is flexible gas tubing typically covered in either a yellow or black jacket. The outer jacket may contain markings indicating the manufacturer and specific CSST name. This tubing is commonly found in homes, often running through attic spaces, wall cavities, crawl spaces, and similar areas.

CSST is typically connected to a black iron or solid malleable iron manifold with multiple ports, usually situated in the attic, from which flexible lines extend to individual appliances. If you suspect you cannot determine whether CSST is present in your home, it's advisable to contact a licensed plumber to conduct an inspection.

Should I worry if Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST) is found in my attic?

The main concern is lightning. If lightning strikes on or near your property, the CSST may be punctured by the high-voltage electrical charge produced. This occurrence can lead to gas release and ignition from the CSST. Testing by our office confirms that fires and explosions may result from lightning-induced CSST failures.

If a fire occurs, it can spread rapidly throughout the house due to the escaping gas from the CSST. In such an event, you should immediately vacate your home, call 9-1-1 to report the fire, then turn off the gas at the meter if safely possible. For other CSST-related questions, please contact the Lubbock Fire Marshal's Office (806) 775-2646 or Building Inspection Department (806) 775-2087.
