About Us
In compliance with State regulations, the Village of Tarrytown issues an annual report detailing the quality of your municipal water. The purpose is to increase awareness about protecting our water sources. We're pleased to report that last year, your tap water met all state health requirements with no violations of contaminant levels or water quality standards.
This report provides an overview of last year's water quality, including information about water sources, contents, and how it compares to State standards. If you have questions about this report or your water service, please contact the Tarrytown Water Division at (914) 631-0356 between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. We encourage you to stay informed about your water quality.
For more information, attend our regularly scheduled Village board meetings held on the first and third Mondays of each month (except summer, when meetings occur monthly). Meeting details can be found at tarrytowngov.com or by calling Village Hall at (914) 631-1885.
Water Sources
Tarrytown has two water sources. Our primary year-round supply comes from the NYC Catskill Aqueduct System, tapped just south of the Kensico Reservoir. This high-quality water isn't filtered but receives ultraviolet disinfection, chlorine treatment, and fluoride addition before reaching our connection.
The emergency backup supply is the NYC Croton Aqueduct, which can provide 4 million gallons daily but requires state authorization for use. In 2017, no water was supplied from the Croton Aqueduct. Both sources are chlorine-disinfected and meet Federal and State microbiological standards.
The Croton source doesn't meet the 1996 Surface Water Treatment Rule requirements for turbidity. While Tarrytown operates under a filtration avoidance waiver, the Village has prepared a filtration study for implementation if required.
Tarrytown Water Division uses a blended orthophosphate injection in treated water as a sequestering agent, approved by the Westchester County Department of Health.
System Overview
Our water system serves approximately 12,000 residents through 2,300 service connections. In 2017, we produced 805,461,000 gallons from the Catskill Aqueduct, with a daily average of 2.207 million gallons. Our peak demand was 3.753 million gallons. The estimated unaccounted-for water is approximately 37.63%, which includes water used for main breaks, firefighting, street cleaning, and hydrant flushing.
The Village maintains a permanent Water Conservation Law since 1989. Our infrastructure includes a 4.0-million-gallon high service tank above 620 South Broadway, a 900,000-gallon low service tank north of Sunnyside Way, and a 50,000-gallon air break tank at the Shaft-10 Pumping Station.
Billing Information
The average single-family household uses approximately 9,800 cubic feet of water annually. Tarrytown Water Division bills quarterly, with an average bill of $191.24 per period ($764.97 annually). Residential water costs $80.45 per 1,000 cubic feet, while commercial rates range from $82.74 to $142.99 per 1,000 cubic feet. Outside commercial customers pay $124.11 to $214.46 per 1,000 cubic feet. Eligible senior citizens receive a reduced rate of $59.99 per 1,000 cubic feet.

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:
Tarrytown Water Supply Municipal Water Company and CDCShould I take special precautions with my tap water?
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants in tap water than the general population. People with compromised immune systems, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS, elderly residents, and infants may face increased infection risks. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding safe water consumption. CDC guidelines on reducing Cryptosporidium and other microbial contamination risks are available through the Safe Municipal Water Hotline (800-426-4791) or at www.Epa.Gov/safewater.
Water Quality Information
The Water Quality Data Table lists all detected contaminants during testing. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk, as regular monitoring ensures compliance with safety standards.
Are water softeners recommended?
While treatment facilities remove iron from municipal water, hardness remains an issue, and water softeners are often beneficial. Water hardness varies depending on the groundwater source used. We recommend initially setting water softeners at 18 grains and adjusting as needed. In 2017, testing showed an average of 19.39 grains per gallon.
What should I know about hydrant flushing?
Hydrant flushing improves water quality and occurs in spring and fall as needed. This maintenance is typically conducted at night to minimize service disruptions, though temporary water discoloration may occur immediately afterward.
Are there convenient ways to pay my water bill?
The Department of Public Works offers automatic bill payment through checking or savings accounts. Customers can also view account status and pay bills online with a credit card 24/7. Account viewing is free, while credit card payments include a $4.95 convenience fee from the processing company.
