Our Pick · Well Water
How we ranked: on performance and value for well water: control valve, resin, iron and flow handling, warranty, return terms and price. We make the SoftPro Elite and ECO, so every competitor detail on this page comes from the maker's own website and is dated. We did not lab-test these systems. Specs, prices and policies were checked October 30, 2026; confirm them before you buy.
Our pick for the best well water softener is the SoftPro Elite Smart HE (Well) . It's a dedicated well version with an IAPMO- and NSF-certified control valve that regenerates on demand (metered) or on a timer. It uses 10% high-capacity crosslinked resin, with fine mesh as standard, and comes in flow options (6–7, 8–10 or 11+ GPM) matched to your well pump. It starts at $1,327 for the softener-only package (checked October 30, 2026), ships free within the USA (excludes AK, HI and PR), is Assembled in USA, and its 6-MONTH money-back guarantee covers installed systems. On a tighter budget, the SoftPro ECO Well starts at $947. If your well has red-water iron, a rotten-egg (sulfur) smell, sediment, manganese, low pH, or clear-water iron above 3 ppm, put the AIO Iron Master in front of the softener.

Do You Need a Softener on Your Well?
Not every well needs one. Hardness is measured in grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter (mg/L); 1 gpg = 17.1 mg/L. The U.S. Geological Survey classes water as moderately hard at 61–120 mg/L (3.5–7 gpg), hard at 121–180 mg/L (7–10.5 gpg) and very hard above 180 mg/L (10.5+ gpg) .
- Under 3.5 gpg: you usually don't need a softener. Fix any iron, odor or pH problem on its own.
- 3.5–7 gpg: a softener is optional. It's worth it if you see spotting, scale on fixtures, or dry skin and hair.
- Over 7 gpg: a softener protects your water heater, fixtures and appliances, and this is where it pays off.
Well water also changes with the season and as the water table moves, so test before you buy. The 6-Point Well Test below lists the numbers to get first.
Why Well Water Is Different: The 4 Enemies
City water arrives treated and fairly consistent. Well water is raw, and it causes problems four ways:
Hardness
Calcium and magnesium build scale in pipes, water heaters and appliances. The USGS calls water very hard above 10.5 gpg.
Fix: a salt-based softener sized for your hardness.
Iron
Stains laundry and fixtures orange and tastes metallic. A softener handles clear-water iron up to 3 ppm. Red-water iron, or clear-water iron above 3 ppm, needs an iron filter first.
Fix: the softener up to 3 ppm clear-water iron; the AIO Iron Master above that or for red water.
Sulfur (H₂S)
Hydrogen sulfide gas causes the rotten-egg smell. A softener does nothing for odor.
Fix: the AIO Iron Master, then the softener.
Sediment and seasonal swings
Sand and silt wear valves and clog aerators, and well chemistry can shift with rain and season.
Fix: a Big Blue sediment filter first, and re-test your well from time to time.
Symptom Decoder: What Your Water Is Telling You
Match what you see, smell or taste to the likely culprit, then fix it in the right order.
| What you notice | Likely culprit | Confirm with | The right fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water comes out clear, then turns orange after it sits; orange stains on laundry and fixtures | Clear-water (ferrous) iron | An iron test (ppm) | Up to 3 ppm: the softener alone, sized up 5 gpg per ppm. Above 3 ppm: AIO Iron Master, then softener |
| Water is already rust-colored when it comes out of the tap | Red-water (ferric) iron | An iron test; the color at the tap | AIO Iron Master, then softener |
| Rotten-egg smell, worse in hot water | Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) | Any detectable level | AIO Iron Master, then softener |
| White crust on faucets, spots on glassware | Hardness (calcium and magnesium) | 7+ gpg = "hard" (USGS scale) | Salt-based softener: the Elite Smart HE (Well) |
| Blue-green stains in sinks and tubs | Acidic water (low pH) corroding copper | A pH test | AIO Iron Master (raises low pH; works down to pH 5.8), then softener |
| Black stains, bitter metallic taste | Manganese | Above 0.05 mg/L stains (EPA secondary guideline) | AIO Iron Master, then softener |
| Grit in the water, clogged aerators | Sediment (sand and silt) | Visible particles | Big Blue sediment filter and AIO Iron Master, then softener |
Several symptoms at once is common on wells. Iron, manganese and sulfur often show up together, which is why the order (filter first, softener second) matters.
The Iron Meter: What Your Iron Level Demands
Test for iron and note what kind it is. Clear-water (ferrous) iron comes out of the tap clear and turns orange or rust-colored after the water sits. Red-water iron is already rust-colored when it comes out.
| Your well test | What to install |
|---|---|
| Hardness only, no iron | A softener sized for your hardness |
| Clear-water iron up to 3 ppm, no odor | A softener alone. Add 5 gpg to your hardness for every 1 ppm of iron when you size it. Large households may need the iron removed first (see the sizing table) |
| Clear-water iron above 3 ppm | The AIO Iron Master first, then the softener |
| Red-water iron at any level | The AIO Iron Master first, then the softener |
| Rotten-egg (sulfur) smell, manganese, sediment or low pH, at any iron level | The AIO Iron Master first, then the softener |
The AIO Iron Master removes up to 30 ppm of iron (larger units or dual filtration at the high end), up to 7 ppm of manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. It also catches sediment down to 3 microns and raises low pH (it works down to pH 5.8).
Softener + Iron Filter: When You Need Both
A softener removes hardness, and it can also take out clear-water iron up to 3 ppm as part of that load. It does nothing for odor, and it isn't an iron filter.
- Hardness, plus clear-water iron up to 3 ppm and no odor: the softener alone, sized for the extra iron (see sizing below).
- Red-water iron, a rotten-egg (sulfur) smell, sediment, manganese, low pH, or clear-water iron above 3 ppm: the AIO Iron Master first, then the softener. It uses the same IAPMO- and NSF-certified SoftPro control valve as the Elite.
You can buy them together: the Elite Well is offered as a package with the AIO Iron Master, matched to your well pump's flow rate.
The 5 well water softeners, ranked
1. SoftPro Elite Smart HE (Well): best for most well homes
Best for: hard well water, with or without clear-water iron up to 3 ppm.
What we like
- A dedicated well version: a downflow design in three flow options (6–7, 8–10, 11+ GPM) matched to your well pump, in 32,000, 40,000, 48,000 and 64,000 grains.
- An IAPMO- and NSF-certified SoftPro control valve that regenerates on demand (metered) or on a timer.
- 10% high-capacity crosslinked resin, with fine mesh as standard on the well version. The resin typically lasts 10–20 years.
- Less salt. Real use depends on unit size, household and hardness. For example, a 48,000-grain Elite on a 10-day cycle uses about 7 × 40-lb bags a year, against about 17.5 for a traditional unit. That's about 60% less salt, saving roughly $89 a year at $8.50 a bag.
- Add the optional SaltCo smart salt-level sensor. It has its own Wi-Fi app and alerts you before the brine tank runs low, and we recommend it for every buyer.
Watch out for
- It doesn't fix odor, red-water iron, or clear-water iron above 3 ppm. Pair it with the AIO Iron Master for those.
- You need a drain and a standard outlet near the install spot.
- 64,000 grains is the largest size. Big households with iron may need the iron removed first to keep 7+ days between regenerations (see the sizing table).
- Warranty: limited lifetime warranty on the control valve and essential components.
- Returns: a 6-MONTH money-back guarantee that covers installed systems, with no restocking fee. You pay return shipping.
- Shipping: free within the USA (excludes AK, HI and PR); ships within 1–3 business days.
2. SoftPro ECO Well: best budget pick
Best for: well homes on a tighter budget with hardness and clear-water iron up to 3 ppm.
What we like
- From $947 (checked October 30, 2026).
- The SoftPro ECO control valve, handling hardness plus clear-water iron up to 3 ppm.
Watch out for
- For red-water iron, odor, or clear-water iron above 3 ppm, put the AIO Iron Master in front.
- Warranty: Lifetime Limited Warranty (see the product page for terms).
- Returns: the same 6-MONTH money-back guarantee, covering installed systems, with no restocking fee. You pay return shipping.
3. Kinetico: best for a dealer-installed, non-electric system
Best for: homeowners who want a dealer to test, install and service, and who want a softener that runs without electricity.
- What we like: Kinetico describes its Premier XP as a non-electric, twin-tank system that meters your water use and regenerates only when needed. It says the S150 XP removes hardness and soluble iron (no ppm limit is stated). The Premier carries a 10-year warranty on all parts, including resin.
- Watch out for: no published prices; it's sold only through authorized dealers, so you'll get a quote. The resin isn't specified, and the warranty excludes freight and labor.
4. Culligan: best for a full-service dealer
Best for: homeowners who want a local dealer to test the well, then install and service the system, with the option to buy, finance or rent.
- What we like: a free in-home water test and consultation through a local dealer. The Aquasential Smart High Efficiency softener uses Aqua-Sensor to regenerate only as needed, plus proportional brining. Culligan lists whole-system WQA certification to NSF/ANSI 44 for hardness reduction, and a lifetime warranty on the tank and Cullex resin.
- Watch out for: no published price (dealer quote only), and the product page gives no iron rating. The control valve body is covered for 10 years, excluding internal parts, and the whole conditioner for 1 year.
SoftPro vs Culligan on wells: SoftPro publishes its price ($1,327 for the Elite Well, checked October 30, 2026) and you buy direct, with no in-home sales visit.
5. SpringWell: best direct-to-you alternative
Best for: DIY buyers in large homes who want an 80,000-grain size.
- What we like: it's sold direct in 32K, 48K and 80K sizes, with an electronic head and "smart" regeneration. Orders typically ship in 3–5 business days.
- Returns: per SpringWell's return policy, returns within 6 months are accepted only for unused, uninstalled systems, with a 10% restocking fee, and you pay return shipping. Installed systems can't be returned unless SpringWell finds them defective.
- Well water: no iron ppm limit is stated. SpringWell's warranty says iron and manganese will oxidize the media, and it recommends pre-treatment for well water with iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide.
- Warranty: a lifetime warranty against defects, with 5 years on the electronic head. The resin grade isn't stated.
When Another Option Is the Better Buy
- You want a dealer to test, install and service everything: Culligan or Kinetico. Neither publishes a price, so you'll get a quote.
- You want soft water during regeneration with no power: Kinetico lists a non-electric twin-tank design.
- Your hardness and iron load need more than 64,000 grains: remove the iron first with the AIO Iron Master, or look at a larger unit such as SpringWell's 80,000-grain size.
What Size Well Water Softener Do You Need?
Start with your daily hardness load: people × gallons per person per day (about 80) × hardness (gpg) . If you have clear-water iron up to 3 ppm, add 5 gpg for every 1 ppm. Above 3 ppm, or with red-water iron, put the AIO Iron Master in front instead. Then pick a model that lasts at least 7–10 days between regenerations.
Worked example: a family of 4 × 80 gallons × 12 gpg = 3,840 grains per day . Ten days is 38,400 grains, so the 48,000-grain model fits with headroom (about 12 days). Add 2 ppm of clear-water iron (+10 gpg, so 22 gpg effective) and the load becomes 7,040 grains a day. The 64,000-grain model covers that for about 9 days.
Assumes 10 gpg hardness and about 80 gallons per person per day. Each pick is the smallest size that lasts at least 10 days between regenerations (the 64,000-grain model at least 7). Clear-water iron only; above 3 ppm or with red-water iron, put the AIO Iron Master in front.
| People | No iron | 1 ppm | 2 ppm | 3 ppm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 32K | 32K | 32K | 40K |
| 3 | 32K | 40K | 48K | 64K |
| 4 | 32K | 48K | 64K | 64K |
| 5 | 40K | 64K | 64K | Remove iron first → 40K |
| 6 | 48K | 64K | Remove iron first → 48K | Remove iron first → 48K |

Size my softener + get my water reportThe Correct Install Order on a Well
The order matters as much as the softener itself. Sediment, odor and any iron the softener can't handle are dealt with before the softener. The order on a well:
- Well pump: the source.
- Pressure tank: always before treatment.
- Sediment filter (Big Blue cartridge): catches sand and grit from the well so they don't foul the iron filter or the softener valve.
- AIO Iron Master (if your test calls for it): for red-water iron, a rotten-egg smell, manganese, low pH or clear-water iron above 3 ppm.
- Softener: the Elite Smart HE (Well).
- Soft water to the whole house.
Can You Install a Well Water Softener Yourself?
Yes, if you're comfortable with basic plumbing. SoftPro systems ship direct for DIY installation, or any licensed plumber can install them. Most homeowners can do it with a bypass valve, two connections on the main line, a drain line and an outlet.
- Shut off the pump and relieve pressure at a faucet.
- Pick the spot: after the pressure tank and any sediment or iron filters, before the water heater. You need a drain and a standard outlet nearby.
- Install the bypass valve so you can service the softener without shutting off the house.
- Connect in and out in the right flow direction (the arrows are on the valve).
- Run the drain line with an air gap and connect the brine-tank overflow.
- Add salt and program the valve with your hardness number (follow the manual), then start the first regeneration.
Local code may require a licensed plumber or a permit, so check before you start.
The 6-Point Well Test: Numbers to Get First
A softener bought without these six numbers is a guess. A basic well test gives you all of them:
- Hardness (gpg): sizes the system. It's the main number.
- Iron (ppm), and whether it's clear-water or red-water: clear-water iron up to 3 ppm is handled by the softener (add 5 gpg per ppm when sizing). Above 3 ppm, or any red-water iron, the AIO Iron Master goes in first.
- pH: low pH corrodes copper. The AIO Iron Master raises it (it works down to pH 5.8).
- Manganese (mg/L): causes black stains. The AIO Iron Master removes up to 7 ppm.
- Sulfur (H₂S): the rotten-egg check; your nose is the first test. A softener won't remove it.
- Sediment and flow (GPM): tells you whether you need a sediment filter, and which flow option your pump supports.
Bring those six numbers to the sizing calculator to get a recommendation for your own well.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best water softener for well water?
We rank the SoftPro Elite Smart HE (Well) first on performance and value. It has an IAPMO- and NSF-certified control valve that regenerates on demand (metered) or on a timer, 10% high-capacity crosslinked resin with fine mesh as standard, and flow options matched to your well pump. It starts at $1,327 (checked October 30, 2026), and its 6-MONTH money-back guarantee covers installed systems. On a budget, the SoftPro ECO Well starts at $947. For red-water iron, a rotten-egg smell, sediment, manganese, low pH or clear-water iron above 3 ppm, put the AIO Iron Master in front.
Can a water softener remove iron from well water?
Yes, up to a point. SoftPro softeners handle clear-water (ferrous) iron up to 3 ppm: iron that comes out of the tap clear and turns orange after the water sits. When you size the softener, add 5 gpg to your hardness for every 1 ppm of iron. Red-water iron, or clear-water iron above 3 ppm, needs an iron filter such as the AIO Iron Master in front of the softener.
Do I need an iron filter and a softener for well water?
You need both if your well has red-water iron, a rotten-egg (sulfur) smell, sediment, manganese, low pH, or clear-water iron above 3 ppm. The AIO Iron Master goes first and the softener second. If your only issues are hardness and clear-water iron up to 3 ppm, the softener alone is enough.
What size water softener do I need for well water?
Multiply people × about 80 gallons a day × your hardness in gpg. Add 5 gpg for each 1 ppm of clear-water iron, up to 3 ppm. Then pick a model that lasts at least 7–10 days between regenerations. A family of four at 12 gpg uses 3,840 grains a day, or 38,400 over 10 days, so the 48,000-grain model fits with headroom. Six people at the same hardness need the 64,000-grain model. Our sizing calculator does the math for you.
Will a softener remove the rotten egg smell?
No. Softeners do nothing for odor. The smell is hydrogen sulfide, and the AIO Iron Master removes it before the water reaches the softener.
Does well water need a different softener than city water?
Often, yes. Well water can carry iron, sulfur, sediment and manganese that treated city water usually doesn't, and your flow is limited by your well pump. The SoftPro Elite comes in a separate well version: a downflow design with fine mesh resin as standard, sold in three flow options (6–7, 8–10 and 11+ GPM) to match your pump, and offered as a package with the AIO Iron Master.
How often does a well water softener regenerate?
It depends on unit size, household and hardness. A typical SoftPro Elite regenerates about every 14 days and uses about one 40-lb bag of salt every 2–4 months. When you size one, choose a model that lasts at least 7–10 days between regenerations. The valve can regenerate on demand (metered), based on the water you actually use, or on a timer.
Can I install a well water softener myself?
Yes, if you have basic plumbing skills. You'll need a bypass valve, inlet and outlet connections after the pressure tank and any filters, a drain line with an air gap, and a standard outlet. Check local code, which may require a licensed plumber or a permit.
