About Us
We're pleased to present this year's Annual Water Quality Report to our community. This document highlights the quality of water we deliver daily to our customers. Our primary goal is to provide you with safe, reliable water service.
We want you to understand our ongoing efforts to improve water treatment processes and protect our valuable water resources. We're committed to ensuring the highest quality water reaches your tap.
Our water comes from groundwater sources. We maintain five wells that draw from the Manokin and Ocean City Aquifers. The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, along with the Division of Public Health, has completed a source water assessment for our area. If you'd like to review this evaluation, please contact Town Hall at 302-539-8011 or visit http://delawaresourcewater.org/checks/.
Overall, Bethany Beach Water has been assessed as having high susceptibility to nutrients, pathogens, petroleum hydrocarbons, and pesticides, with slight susceptibility to PCBs, other organic compounds, metals, and additional inorganic compounds.
If you have questions about this report or your water service, please contact Cliff Graviet at 302-539-8011. We want our customers to be fully informed about their water utility. For more information, you're welcome to attend our regularly scheduled meetings held on the third Friday of each month at 2:00 p.m. at Town Hall, 214 Garfield Parkway.
The Public Health Office of Drinking Water and Bethany Beach Water Department routinely monitor for contaminants in your tap water according to Federal and State regulations. Our monitoring covers the period from January 1st to December 31st, 2017.
We're proud that your tap water meets or exceeds all Federal and State requirements. Through our monitoring and testing, we've detected some substances at levels below the MCL (Maximum Contaminant Level). The EPA sets these levels very strictly to protect public health.
Lead is a particular concern, especially for pregnant women and young children. If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems. Lead in tap water primarily comes from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. While Bethany Beach Water Department provides high-quality drinking water, we cannot control the materials used in your home's plumbing components.
When water has been sitting in pipes for several hours, you can minimize potential lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you're concerned about lead, you may wish to have your water tested. For more information, contact the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or visit www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
All drinking water, including bottled water, naturally contains some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants than the general population, particularly those with compromised immune systems, the elderly, and infants. These individuals should seek advice from their healthcare providers regarding safe drinking water consumption.
We at Bethany Beach Water Department work around the clock to provide top quality water to every tap. We ask that all our customers help us protect our water resources, which are vital to our community, our way of life, and our children's future.

Bethany Bay Ocean View Drinking Water Company and EPABethany Bay Ocean View Municipal Water Report Info
Bethany Beach was established by members of the Christian Church (also known as the Disciples of Christ) from the Washington DC area and Pennsylvania. Their initial vision wasn't to create a town but to secure appropriate land for an annual seaside gathering for Christian churches nationwide. The name "Bethany" was chosen by H.L. Atkinson, who won a national contest and received a beachfront lot as his prize.
The character of Bethany still reflects the original settlers' intention to create "a haven of rest for quiet people." The first structure built in Bethany was the temple, an octagonal amphitheater on the Christian Missionary Society's assembly grounds. Dedicated on July 12, 1901, though still incomplete at the time, it featured brown shingles and measured 100 feet in diameter with a dome on top. The structure lasted 60 years before succumbing to storms and termite damage.
Early challenges included an unfulfilled promise of railway access, poor water quality, and rainwater flooding the Auditorium. These issues led to leadership changes at the Bethany Beach Improvement Company. In fall 1902, six representatives from Pittsburgh purchased the company, relocated to the Beach, and shaped its development for years to come. These influential figures included W.R. Errett (lawyer), John M. Addy (plumber), W.S. Kidd (steel manufacturer), R.S. Latimer (tea merchant), Dr. T.E. Cramblet (president of Bethany College in WV), and W.A. Dinker (first president of the new company).
The Town of Bethany Beach recently celebrated its centennial with festivities beginning on July 4, 2001, coinciding with the Annual Fourth of July Parade and fireworks, followed by four memorable community events.
