Municipal water, including bottled options, typically contains small amounts of certain impurities. The presence of these substances doesn't automatically indicate health risks. For comprehensive information about contaminants and potential health effects, residents can contact the EPA's Safe Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Water sources in our community include groundwater wells, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and springs. As water travels across land or through ground layers, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some areas, radioactive materials. It can also pick up substances from animal or human activities.

Common contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic substances like salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, and farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, stormwater runoff, and residential use
  • Organic chemical compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
  • Radioactive materials that occur naturally or result from oil/gas development and mining

To ensure tap water safety, EPA regulations limit certain contaminants in public water systems, while FDA regulations establish similar standards for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.
