Buffalo Municipal Water Report Information
Buffalo City was established as a township from Clarence on February 8, 1810. The area underwent several administrative changes, with Amherst being separated in 1818 and Tonawanda in 1836. Buffalo Village was first incorporated on April 2, 1813, and was reorganized twice before being officially incorporated as a city on April 20, 1832.

The city boundaries were expanded to include portions of the Mile Strip Reservation south of York and North Streets. A new charter granted on April 13, 1853, further incorporated the town of "Black Rock" within the city limits. Buffalo extends approximately 10 miles along Lake Erie's eastern shore and the upper Niagara River, covering roughly 40 square miles.

The primary waterways in Buffalo are Big Buffalo Creek and Scajaquady Creek, which flow into Lake Erie and Niagara River respectively. The main commercial district is situated along the lake shore near the harbor, in an area once considered an "irreclaimable quagmire" but now hosts substantial warehouses, stores, manufacturing plants, and residential buildings.

Buffalo's topography rises gradually from the shoreline, reaching elevations of about 100 feet in some locations, though most of the city sits on a plateau approximately 50 feet above lake level. The "Buffalo Plains" and North Buffalo areas along the river contain extensive limestone quarries that provide excellent building materials.

The city features a well-planned grid layout with wide, straight streets that are properly maintained. Buffalo's water supply comes primarily from Niagara River via the Buffalo Water Works Company. The water supply facility is positioned 88 feet higher than the river and can hold 13.5 million gallons. The water is distributed through 31 miles of piping using two powerful pumps, each capable of moving 235 gallons.
