Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:
Hugo Municipal Water Company and CDCHow does Greenburgh obtain its water supply? There's a fascinating article in the NY Times by Emily S. Rueb with illustrations by Josh Cochran that explains the NYC water system mechanics. Greenburgh receives all water from NYC delivery systems. View this remarkable engineering feat at: http://www.Nytimes.Com/interactive/2016/03/24/nyregion/how-nyc-receives-its-water-new-york-one hundred and one.Html?_r=zero or Click Here if the link fails.
How can I verify Greenburgh Consolidated Water District No. 1 water safety? Following State regulations, the District provides yearly reports detailing water quality. These reports summarize the previous year's water conditions. To access the complete 2015 report, Click Here. For questions about these reports or your water, contact Charles Martins, Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator at (914) 989-1900. The Westchester County Health Department, Bureau of Environmental Quality oversees the District at (914) 813-5000.
What water source serves Greenburgh Consolidated Water District No. 1? The District purchases all water from New York City's Department of Environmental Protection. This surface water originates in protected Catskill Mountain watersheds 120 miles northwest of Greenburgh before traveling through NYC-owned infrastructure.
What steps should I take after a water main repair? When service resumes, water may appear discolored. Run cold water for 20-25 minutes to flush sediment from your lines. The discoloration comes from sediment, not bacteria. Hugo's water undergoes continuous treatment and monitoring by the Water Department, Health Department, and EPA.
Is Fluoride added to Hugo municipal water? Yes, our system is among many in New York that provides controlled fluoride levels for dental health protection. The New York City DEP adds fluoride before delivery. According to CDC guidelines, fluoride effectively prevents cavities at 0.7-1.2 mg/L. NYC targets a fluoride dose of 0.8 mg/L.
Should we conserve water? Absolutely – we all must use water efficiently. Conservation doesn't require sacrifice but means using supplies wisely. Permanent habit changes – being mindful when watering gardens, using faucets, running dishwashers or laundry, and flushing toilets – help ensure adequate supply during droughts and directly impact your water bill.
How is water commonly wasted?
- Toilet waste: A trickling toilet wastes 30 gallons per day (gpd), a leaking toilet wastes 250 gpd, and a constantly running toilet wastes 4,000 gpd.
- Tub/shower/sink waste: A slow drip wastes 36 gpd, a constant drip wastes 180 gpd, a half-open faucet wastes 1,620 gpd, and a fully open faucet wastes 3,600 gpd.
- Outdoor conservation: Use self-closing nozzles, plant drought-resistant species, and sweep rather than hose down driveways.
- Bathroom conservation: Consider High-Efficiency Toilets, place water-filled bottles in older toilet tanks to reduce flush volume, repair faulty components, and take brief showers instead of baths.
- Kitchen/laundry conservation: Run full loads in dishwashers/washing machines, choose Energy Star appliances, install faucet aerators, and wash dishes in filled basins rather than under running water.
