About Us
Iron Treatment Process: How we manage iron in your municipal water supply
Iron comprises approximately 5% of the earth's crust and naturally dissolves into groundwater through rocks and minerals. Generally, the longer groundwater remains underground flowing through cracks and small openings, the higher the iron concentration becomes.
The chlorination process used to disinfect the Township's groundwater can increase iron and manganese precipitation (oxidation). This chemical reaction may result in resident complaints about discolored water, laundry staining, and fixture spotting.
To prevent these quality issues, the Township treats its water with a polyphosphate agent that both sequesters iron/manganese and inhibits corrosion. Our treatment plant at well #5 specifically removes iron, while wells 1, 2, 3, and 6 receive polyphosphate treatment that keeps metals in solution rather than removing them.
Hydrant Flushing Program
The Township conducts biannual hydrant flushing to purge discolored water and verify hydrant functionality. Water storage tanks are also cleaned twice yearly. If you experience discolored water, run cold tap water for 20 minutes. If discoloration persists, contact the Township for targeted hydrant flushing in your area.
Vulnerable Populations Advisory
Some individuals may be more susceptible to contaminants in tap water than the general population. Immunocompromised persons, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly residents, and infants may face increased infection risks. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing Cryptosporidium and microbial contamination risks are available at 1-800-426-4791.
This annual report presents laboratory testing results for White Bear Township's water supply from January 1 to January 31, 2017, demonstrating how your water meets safety regulations.
