South Saint Paul Municipal Water Report Info

About Our Water Source
South St. Paul provides municipal water from groundwater sources through four wells ranging from 339 to 500 feet deep. These wells draw from the Jordan, Jordan-St. Lawrence, and Prairie Du Chien-Jordan aquifers.

Community Water Decisions
Water is a vital natural resource within an interconnected ecosystem. What residents apply to lawns and what businesses release into the air eventually affects our water quality. Simple daily choices like turning off taps, using phosphorus-free fertilizers, or properly disposing of hazardous waste at Dakota County Eco-Sites make significant differences. Individual actions collectively create citywide improvements when communities work together to protect watersheds and reduce pollution.

PFBA Monitoring
PFBA (perfluorooctanoic acid) has been detected at low levels (0.4 ppb) in South St. Paul water. The Minnesota Department of Health established a Health-Based Value (HBV) of 7 ppb for PFBA, which replaced the previous 1 ppb standard. This updated guideline reflects improved understanding of PFBA's health effects during developmental stages and its persistence in the human body.

Health-Based Values Explained
An HBV represents a calculated concentration of a contaminant that poses minimal health risk, even with daily consumption over a lifetime. These values help state environmental protection programs make informed decisions about groundwater contamination. The current HBV is designed to protect all populations, including developing fetuses, infants, and children. MDH regularly reviews new toxicological information as it becomes available.
