Few Minnesota cities showcase such a rich historical legacy as Northfield, with remarkable preservation of 19th-century architecture throughout the community. History enthusiasts will particularly appreciate the unique exhibits at our Historical Society Museum, educational institutions, and historic downtown district.
In January 1855, John Wesley North journeyed from St. Anthony Falls to establish a settlement on land recently ceded by the Dakota tribe. North selected the Cannon River valley for its hydraulic power potential and abundant natural resources. Alongside his brother-in-law George Loomis, they constructed a sawmill, gristmill, and bridge. When mapping Northfield, they maintained the river's natural curve while organizing the town into 95 structured blocks.
John and Ann Loomis North attracted like-minded individuals to Northfield—people who valued women's rights, temperance, abolition, education, and community support. The financial crisis of 1857 nearly bankrupted the Norths, leading their friend Charles Wheaton to purchase their Northfield properties in 1859.
Northfield's educational foundation began in 1856 with a 25-student school. By 1874, the independent school district formed, and the first graduating class of 1877 consisted of seven young women. Carleton College and St. Olaf College were established in 1866 and 1874 respectively, becoming pillars of the community's educational tradition.

Wheaton produced flour at North's gristmill before selling it to Jesse Ames and Sons, who expanded operations and won recognition for producing the finest flour in the United States at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
Northfield's educational legacy began in 1856 with its first 25-student school. By 1874, the independent school district formed, and in 1877, the first graduating class consisted of seven young women. Carleton College (founded 1866) and St. Olaf College (established 1874) have become prominent educational institutions with current enrollments of approximately 1,900 and 3,000 students respectively.
