About Us
Austin residents receive their municipal water from three treatment facilities that draw from the Lower Colorado River as it flows into Lake Travis and Lake Austin. The City of Austin processes and filters this water according to federal and state guidelines to eliminate potential harmful substances.
Water sources across the country (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through soil layers, it dissolves natural minerals and can be contaminated by animals or human activities.
The Lower Colorado River watershed extends many miles upstream through agricultural areas and urban centers. Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses and bacteria)
- Inorganic contaminants (salts and metals)
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture and urban runoff
- Organic chemicals from industrial processes
- Naturally-occurring radioactive materials
EPA regulations limit certain contaminant levels in public water to ensure safe drinking water. Similarly, FDA regulations establish limits for bottled water contaminants. Some substances may affect taste, color, or odor without posing health risks. For concerns about water quality characteristics, contact Austin Water at 512-972-0021.
All drinking water, including bottled varieties, can reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
