WHERE DOES MY WATER COME FROM?
Butler County Water System, Inc. sources its water from the Green River, a surface water supply flowing through Butler County. The water serves communities north and south of the Green River and is treated at Butler Water's facility in Morgantown.
WATER QUALITY ASSESSMENT
The Safe Drinking Water Act requires Community Public Water Systems to develop a Source Water Assessment Report (SWAP). This report evaluates our susceptibility to contamination and shows it's generally moderate. Areas of concern include potential contaminant sources like bridges, underground storage tanks, an active landfill, and agricultural chemical use near the raw water intake.

WHY ARE THERE CONTAMINANTS IN MY WATER?
All municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Water sources (rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, wells) can collect naturally occurring minerals, radioactive materials, and substances from animal or human activity. EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations establish similar limits for bottled water.

- Microbial: Viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, livestock operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic: Salts and metals from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides/Herbicides: From agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic Chemicals: Synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, stormwater runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive: Naturally occurring or from oil/gas production and mining
SPECIAL HEALTH INFORMATION
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. Butler Water is responsible for providing high-quality water but cannot control plumbing component materials. To minimize lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking if it has been sitting for several hours.
Immunocompromised individuals, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly, and infants may be particularly vulnerable to certain contaminants. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about municipal water consumption.
NEW METER READING TECHNOLOGY
Butler Water is upgrading to Automated Meter Reading (AMR) technology. This modernization will allow remote, accurate readings via wireless signals, offering multiple benefits:
- Eliminating manual, labor-intensive meter reading
- Providing more accurate data for detecting water loss and leaks
- Requiring less maintenance
- Detecting backflow and continuous leaks in customer water service
- Securely transmitting data to collection units in vehicles

With a diverse mix of residential, agricultural, commercial, and industrial customers, Butler Water diligently serves over 4,800 water customers, delivering approximately 900,000 gallons daily. We maintain more than 519 miles of pipeline, 16 pumping stations, and 15 tanks across a 440-square-mile area.
Our water purification process begins at the Green River, where surface water is collected and transported to our Morgantown treatment plant. Here, we purify the water and conduct rigorous testing approximately 10 times monthly to ensure quality and safety.
Butler Water works closely with economic development partners to anticipate changing community needs. This involves identifying growth projections, conceptualizing solutions, and ensuring reliable water services meet future demands. We regularly evaluate system capacities against current and projected usage to determine where improvements are necessary while seeking cost-effective financing to keep rates affordable.
HISTORY
Butler Water began by establishing infrastructure to deliver crucial water services to remote and undeveloped areas throughout Butler County. Initially drawing from small wells and intakes, the system underwent a significant upgrade in the mid-1990s when Butler Water constructed its own water treatment plant.
