Owensboro Municipal Utilities is committed to providing our community with reliable, high-quality utility services at affordable rates. Since 1900, OMU has delivered water and electricity to Owensboro residents.
In 1997, the locally owned utility expanded to offer Internet services to business customers, and in 2014, began providing telephone service to direct web (fiber) clients. OMU stands as Kentucky's largest municipal electric and water system, serving over 26,000 electric, 24,000 water, and 160 telecommunications customers.
As a municipally-owned utility, OMU takes pride in community involvement. Our employees actively participate in local initiatives, from youth baseball mentoring to serving on boards of various essential non-profit organizations throughout Owensboro-Daviess County.
OMU operates under the oversight of a five-member Owensboro Utility Commission appointed by the mayor. Commissioners serve three-year staggered terms and meet publicly on the third Thursday monthly at the Customer Service Center on Tamarack Road.
The utility formed when Owensboro residents voted to establish their own electric system in 1895, with power generation beginning December 31, 1900. Residents also approved creating a deep well water utility in November 1900, which commenced operations in 1906. These city-run utilities functioned independently until merging into today's OMU in 1940.
Currently organized into Production, Delivery, and Customer Service divisions, OMU continues to expand its services to meet the evolving needs of the Owensboro community.
