About Us
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires all water suppliers to provide customers with annual water quality reports, as mandated by the 1996 Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. This report provides Cassatt Water customers with information about your water supply and helps your family make informed health decisions.
What are the sources of my water?
Most water distributed by Cassatt Water comes from 12 ground water wells located throughout Kershaw and Lee Counties. Additionally, some water is purchased from the City of Camden and the Lugoff Rural Water & Sewer Company. Camden's water source is Lake Wateree, treated at their facility on John G. Richards Road. Lugoff's water comes from nine deep wells in the McBee area, treated at their McBee facility.
SCDHEC conducted a Source Water Assessment for public water systems in 2003. To review or obtain this report, contact James Ferguson at 803-898-3531 or FERGUSJM@dhec.sc.gov. A copy is also available at Cassatt Water's office on Old Stagecoach Road.
Are there contaminants in my water?
All water sources potentially contain naturally occurring or human-made substances, including:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage plants, septic systems, agriculture, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals from urban runoff, industrial discharge, or farming
- Herbicides from agriculture, stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or from oil/gas production and mining
All water, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
What about lead in water?
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing, not the water supply itself. When water sits in pipes for several hours, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using it for drinking or cooking. If concerned, have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791 or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

KERSHAW COUNTY AND LEE COUNTY REGIONAL WATER AUTHORITY
Cassatt Water was incorporated on November 18, 1969 as a not-for-profit water authority established to acquire, construct, maintain and provide water distribution services to individuals, farms, businesses, corporations and governmental entities within its service area. Initially, the Water Authority served approximately 500 customers in the rural Cassatt and Sandy Run communities of Kershaw County.
On July 31, 1975, Kershaw County, Lee County and the Water Authority entered into an Agreement for Establishment of Rural Water Service. Since then, the service territory has expanded to include portions of Kershaw, Lee, Sumter and Lancaster Counties. These expansions responded to growing demand and included acquisitions of smaller systems (three special purpose districts and part of Bishopville's system).
The Authority is now a special purpose district of South Carolina, established as a body politic and corporate under Title 33, Chapter 36, Article 8 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976, as amended. The current service area covers approximately 764 square miles and provides water to around 24,300 residents. Governance comes from a nine-member Board of Commissioners.
