WHERE DOES OUR MUNICIPAL WATER COME FROM?
Our tap water originates from two primary surface water resources: Lake Winona and Lake Maumelle. Both lakes supply Jackson Reservoir, a regulating reservoir located in Little Rock. Water travels through pipelines to two treatment facilities in Little Rock: the Jack H. Wilson and Ozark Point water treatment plants.

HOW SAFE IS OUR WATER SOURCE?
The Arkansas Department of Health has conducted a Source Water Vulnerability Assessment for Central Arkansas Water. This assessment identifies potential contamination risks and serves as a foundation for developing water safety protocols. Based on multiple assessment criteria, our water sources were classified as having medium to high vulnerability to contamination. A summary of this assessment is available upon request.

WHAT CONTAMINANTS MIGHT BE PRESENT?
As water moves across land or through soil, it can pick up various substances including:

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage facilities, septic systems, livestock operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants including naturally occurring metals and salts, or those resulting from urban runoff, industrial discharge, or agricultural activities
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agricultural operations, urban runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
  • Radioactive substances that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining

To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. FDA regulations similarly govern bottled water safety standards to protect public health.
