About Us
We are pleased to present this year's Annual Municipal Water Quality Report. This document details the quality water and services we deliver to you daily. Our primary goal is to provide you with a safe and reliable supply of municipal water.
We want to keep you informed about our continuous efforts to improve water treatment processes and protect our valuable water resources. The quality of your water remains our highest priority.
Our water sources consist of two springs in Cherokee County: Sanford Springs (combined ground/surface water) at 4101 County Road 33, and Bristow Springs (combined ground/surface water) at Bristow Gap Road. Bristow Spring draws from the Fort Payne Chert rock layer, while Sanford Spring produces from the Knox Group formation.
We produce approximately 1.2-1.8 million gallons of water daily depending on community demand. After proper treatment and disinfection, water is pumped to our storage system of five ground-level tanks with approximately 2,600,000 gallons capacity. Our network includes roughly 400 miles of waterlines that allow interconnection with neighboring water authorities when necessary.
Our monitoring and testing confirm that your municipal water meets or exceeds all Federal and State requirements. The EPA has determined that your water IS SAFE at current contamination levels. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.
All municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. People with compromised immune systems (such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, elderly individuals, and infants) should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding their water consumption.
If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically comes from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. While we're responsible for providing high-quality water, we cannot control the materials used in household plumbing components.

The Cherokee County Water and Sewer Authority has provided public water service to rural areas in Cherokee County Alabama since 1966. The Authority manages both Bristow and Sanford Springs, currently serving approximately 3,600 customers throughout the region.
These natural springs produce an estimated 5 million gallons daily of pristine spring water. The Water Treatment Plant has a capacity of 2.4 million gallons per day, with actual daily pumping averaging 1.2 million gallons to meet community needs.
Our dedicated staff takes pride in delivering municipal water that consistently meets or exceeds all Federal and Alabama State requirements for safety and quality. Since the mid-1970s, the Cherokee County Water and Sewer Authority has also provided sewer services to the Town of Leesburg.
In 2004, we constructed a new Waste-Water Treatment Plant (SBR) with a capacity of 250,000 gallons daily. Recent expansion has extended sewer service to the Yellow Creek area of the county, and preliminary plans prioritize continued sewer infrastructure development.
