The sources of municipal water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through soil layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may originate from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.
  • Inorganic contaminants, including salts and metals, which can occur naturally or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.
  • Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from various sources including agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses.
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production, and may also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, agricultural applications, and septic systems.
  • Radioactive contaminants, which may occur naturally or result from oil and gas production and mining activities.

To ensure tap water safety, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the California Department of Health Services establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in water provided by public systems. Department regulations also set limits for contaminants in bottled water, providing similar public health protections.

Municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the USEPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants—may face increased infection risks. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about appropriate water consumption. USEPA/CDC guidelines on reducing Cryptosporidium and other microbial infection risks are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

City of Adelanto Municipal Water Report Info

About Adelanto: The City of Adelanto was established in 1915 by E.H. Richardson, inventor of the Hotpoint Electric Iron. After selling his patent for $75,000, Richardson purchased land with the vision of creating one of California's first master-planned communities.

Richardson divided his property into one-acre plots intended for veterans suffering from respiratory conditions following World War I. His original plan included building a respiratory hospital to serve these residents.

While Richardson never fully realized his complete vision, his initial planning established the foundation for what would eventually become the modern City of Adelanto we know today.
