Nancy Backus made history as the first female mayor of Auburn in the city's 120-year existence when elected in 2014. Her background includes a decade as an Auburn city councilmember and 25 years managing finances for Boeing. She holds an accounting degree and proudly balances family life with her husband and college-attending, soccer-playing daughter.

A dedicated advocate for community service and women's advancement, Backus has received numerous recognitions including the Soroptimist International Women Helping Women award (2002), Miss Auburn Scholarship Program's Lifetime Achievement Award (2013), Leadership Institute of South Puget Sound Distinguished Alumni Award (2012), Boeing Career Foundation Program Manager of the Year (2011), Dale Carnegie Human Principles in Action award (2007), and the Business and Professional Women's Woman of Achievement award (2014).

Backus champions women's rights and community health initiatives, earning the American Medical Association's Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service. Her regional leadership extends to addressing homelessness and housing affordability as part of King County Executive Dow Constantine and Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan's One Table initiative, bringing together government, business leaders, service providers, philanthropists, advocates, and people with lived experience to develop innovative solutions.

Her service extends to numerous boards and committees representing Auburn's interests, including All Home Coordinating Board, Association of Washington Cities committees, King County Flood Control District Advisory Committee, Puget Sound Regional Council, Sound Transit Board of Directors, South Sound Behavioral Health Coalition Alliance, U.S. Conference of Mayors committees, South Correction Entity Regional Jail Administrative Board, and Valley Communications Center Board of Directors.
