About Enumclaw Local History: In 1879, Frank and Mary Stevenson established a homestead that would become the town's center. Early settlers originally called this area "Stevensonville," but it was later renamed Enumclaw (meaning "roaring noise") after nearby Enumclaw Mountain. The town was officially platted on October 31, 1885, when railroad development reached the area, and was incorporated on January 27, 1913.
Geography: Situated at 750 feet above sea level, Enumclaw offers a peaceful setting between flat farmlands and the Cascade Mountains. The city encompasses 5.1 square miles of land. With attractive homes and well-maintained yards, Enumclaw is considered one of King County's most appealing communities. The surrounding plateau, home to over 40,000 residents, is renowned as one of the largest purebred horse breeding and boarding regions in the United States.
Attractions: Enumclaw serves as the "Gateway" to both northern entrances of Mt. Rainier National Park via Highway 410. During summer months, visitors can reach Paradise near Mt. Rainier through the scenic Stevens Canyon. With a current population of 11,490, Enumclaw provides comprehensive retail, medical, cultural, educational, and recreational facilities. Both local business owners and residents cite quality of life as their primary reason for maintaining residence in Enumclaw.
