Water Resources: The sources of municipal water (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels across land or through ground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water before treatment include:
- Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, or mining
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that may occur naturally or result from oil/gas production
Water Source Information: Boerne's municipal water comes from both SURFACE AND GROUND water. In 2017, approximately 40% was purchased from the Western Canyon Regional Water Supply Project (WCRWSP) operated by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, with CANYON LAKE as the source. About 27% came from BOERNE LAKE, another surface water source. The remaining 33% was drawn from groundwater wells in the TRINITY GROUP aquifers, specifically the Cow Creek, Lower Glen Rose and Upper Glen Rose formations.
