Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

For more information on your tap water, visit the U.S. CDC:
City of Garden City Municipal Water Company and CDCFAQ To better assist you, we've compiled a list of our customers' most frequently asked questions. If you can't find your answer here, please feel free to contact us directly.
Who is responsible for water leaks near my property?
Please refer to the responsibility diagram. Homeowners are responsible for service pipe repairs from the curb stop (external valve) to the dwelling, regardless of property boundaries. The external valve may be located differently than shown in the diagram. If you notice an outdoor leak, call us immediately at (724) 377-2211 or after hours at (724) 632-2200 so we can shut off the water for repairs.
Why is my water usage reading so high?
Several possibilities exist: meter readings might have been misread or transposed, or you may have an undetected toilet or faucet leak. Contact our office and we'll help resolve the issue promptly.
What should I do about low water pressure?
First check your meter and surrounding area for potential leaks. Then call our office to report the pressure issue in your location.
Why is my water discolored?
Recent repairs may have allowed air to enter the line, causing a milky appearance in your water.
What chemicals are added to our water?
We only add chemicals that have been approved by the National Safety Foundation for municipal water treatment.
My water tastes, looks, or smells unusual. Is it safe?
State law requires all public water systems to maintain minimum chlorine levels of 0.02 mg/L (tested at line endpoints). Systems using chloramine disinfection must maintain 0.5 mg/L levels by state regulations. We test our disinfectant levels daily to ensure safety.
Why does debris come out when I run hot water?
Your water heater likely needs flushing. CAUTION: Most manufacturers recommend hiring a professional for this service. If attempting it yourself, read the owner's manual carefully to avoid injury or damage.
Why do I have a previous balance when I sent my payment?
We may have received your payment after the due date or possibly not received it at all. Call our office and we'll help resolve this matter.
