Wheatland Electric Cooperative Inc Municipal Water Report Info
Wheatland Electric takes pride in "Delivering Energy for Life" to over 20,000 Kansas households and businesses through approximately 32,000 meters. Our mission is vital as we supply electricity that powers essential grain bin fans after harvest, keeps life-support equipment operational for vulnerable seniors, illuminates school athletic fields, and provides reassuring night lights for children.

We're not just a company - we're a Cooperative owned by those we serve. Our members span 14 Kansas counties and portions of 2 Colorado counties. In 2014, our Kansas members voted for self-regulation, bringing control of pricing and projects back to the local community where it belongs.

Our infrastructure includes over 100,000 poles and more than 4,500 miles of power lines covering nearly 4,600 square miles. We believe every customer deserves equal service quality regardless of location.

The cooperative began in 1948 when nine forward-thinking Western Kansas residents formed Wheatland Electric Cooperative after being overlooked by profit-driven power companies reluctant to connect rural America to the electrical grid. The founders—Jess Taylor, Frank Crouch, Benarr Nelson, Kenneth Davis, Abram Buck, Joseph Ridder, Paul Johnson, Iman Wiatt, and Richard Hobson—learned about electrical systems, secured loans, established offices, and installed miles of lines. By 1950, they were ready to welcome 2,246 additional members.

Today, we maintain that pioneering spirit. When internet providers failed to deliver reliable broadband to Western Kansas, we created our own service that now serves over 3,000 members. Recognizing water quality challenges in Garden City, we established Wheatland Water to ensure reliable supply. When Great Bend, Harper, and surrounding communities suffered poor service, Wheatland helped take over from the investor-owned company to restore reliable power.

Whatever challenges arise next, we're prepared to face them together as a member cooperative—and that's powerful!
