About Us
Sources of Municipal Water: The sources of tap water (both municipal and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or through soil, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can absorb substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial Contaminants: Viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic Contaminants: Salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial discharge, oil and gas production, or farming
- Pesticides and Herbicides: From various sources including agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic Chemical Contaminants: By-products of industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive Contaminants: Naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. The FDA sets similar standards for bottled water. All drinking water, including bottled varieties, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
Community Involvement: You're invited to participate in Town Commission meetings to voice your concerns about your water supply. Please call (954) 457-1300 or visit the City's website at https://hallandalebeachfl.gov/calendar.asp?CID=29,14 for meeting schedules and additional information.
