FKAA - Florida Keys RO Plants

In 2017, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) conducted a Resource Water Assessment on our system as part of their statewide water source assessment initiative. These assessments identify potential contamination sources near water supplies throughout the state, but only indicate possible risks rather than confirmed contamination.

The FDEP assessment of the shallow aquifer system in Florida Town identified two potential contamination sources near our wells: an injection well and petroleum storage tanks. Both were classified by FDEP as low concern. The FKAA injection well, used for removing concentrate from the RO treatment plant, extends 2,674 feet through multiple clay layers that act as natural confining barriers. The only contaminant is chloride from the Floridan Aquifer.

The petroleum storage tanks at FKAA's Water Treatment Plant are properly registered with the State of Florida and have no history of spills or compliance issues. Treatment Process

The Water District utilizes conventional treatment methods that include disinfection. Chlorine is added to eliminate harmful microorganisms. All chemicals are regulated and approved for municipal water use.

1. Why does my water appear cloudy sometimes? This is typically caused by dissolved oxygen being released as water warms or pressure decreases. Cold water holds more oxygen than warm water. When saturated water warms or pressure changes, oxygen releases, creating a temporary cloudy appearance that typically clears within 30 seconds. This is completely safe.
2. What causes brown or red water? Discoloration often results from pipeline maintenance or repairs. Iron or mineral deposits inside pipes can dislodge during these activities. If related to line work, run your tap until clear. If water doesn't clear within a few minutes, contact the Water District at (281) 469-9405.
3. What is the white residue on my faucets? The white buildup is calcium carbonate, a natural mineral present in the water supply.
4. Is fluoride added to the water? No, the District does not add fluoride, though naturally occurring fluoride may be present. Refer to our Consumer Confidence Report for specific details.
5. How is water safety monitored? The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requires continuous monitoring of water turbidity and chlorine levels at treatment plants. Regular chlorine sampling and monthly bacterial testing occur throughout the distribution system. If coliform bacteria are detected during routine sampling, the District implements thorough flushing and disinfection protocols, followed by additional testing to ensure water safety before resuming normal operations.
