Total Chlorine: Chlorine and Chloramines are standard disinfectants added to municipal water to prevent bacterial growth in the distribution system. Total Chlorine measurements indicate the overall concentration and effectiveness of the disinfectant present. These disinfectants, at regulated levels, are safe for human consumption. The acceptable range shown on page 1 represents the optimal level for eliminating harmful organisms while maintaining the integrity of both FKAA and customer plumbing systems.

Hardness: Water hardness measures the mineral content in water, primarily Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg). The FKAA's water comes from a protected groundwater source beneath pine Rockland. The primary Biscayne Aquifer flows through limestone composed mainly of calcium carbonate, which contributes to water hardness. FKAA softens the water before distribution, resulting in moderately hard water reaching consumers. This process reduces mineral buildup on cookware, fixtures, appliances, and water heaters while decreasing soap and detergent usage.

The hardness level throughout the FKAA system is suitable for most household appliances. Regular maintenance typically eliminates the need for additional water conditioning. Some sensitive appliances may require further softening for optimal performance—manufacturers can provide specific requirements for their products. If the hardness level in your results exceeds manufacturer recommendations, additional softening may be beneficial. Otherwise, further water softening is unnecessary. Water hardness has no negative health impacts.
