Incorporated on March 27, 1911, Fort Lauderdale encompasses approximately 36 square miles with an estimated population of 176,747. Location
Fort Lauderdale is situated on Florida's southeast coast in east-central Broward County, approximately 23 miles north of Miami and 42 miles south of Palm Beach. The city borders nine other municipalities and unincorporated county areas.
Historical Background
The city is named for a Second Seminole War fort built along the New River in 1838. That year, Major William Lauderdale led Tennessee Volunteers south along Florida's east coast to secure Seminole agricultural lands. Three forts named after Major Lauderdale were constructed: the first at New River's fork, the second at Tarpon Bend, and the largest at the Bahia Mar beachfront site. None of these historical forts remain today.
