About Us
In the 2017 Water Quality report, you'll encounter technical terminology that might be unfamiliar. To help you better understand these terms, we've provided definitions below:
Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest permissible level of a contaminant in municipal water, set as close to MCLGs as feasible using best available treatment technology.
Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The contaminant level in municipal water below which there is no known or expected health risk, allowing for a safety margin.
Action Level (AL): The concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment requirements or other regulations a water system must follow.
Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL): The highest allowed level of disinfectant in water. Evidence confirms disinfection is necessary to control microbial contaminants.
Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level Goal (MRDLG): Disinfectant level in water below which there's no known or expected health risk. MRDLGs don't reflect benefits of disinfectants in controlling microbes.
Other terms: "ND" means not detected; "NA" means not applicable; Parts per billion (ppb) equals one part by weight of analyte to one billion parts by weight of water; Parts per million (ppm) equals one part by weight of analyte to one million parts by weight of water.
Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
