About Us
RADON INFORMATION: Radon 222, commonly referred to as radon, is a colorless, odorless gas occurring naturally in soil, air and municipal water. It forms from radioactive uranium decay found in many soil types. Most indoor radon comes from foundation soil and can accumulate to dangerous levels without proper ventilation. In most homes, health risks from water-based radon are minimal compared to airborne radon exposure. For more information, contact EPA's Radon Hotline at 1-800-SOS-RADON.
CRYPTOSPORIDIUM TESTING: WASD began testing for Cryptosporidium in 1993 and has conducted regular testing since 1994. To date, neither Cryptosporidium nor Giardia (another protozoan) have been detected in the source water supplying WASD's water treatment facilities.
NITRATE ADVISORY: Although nitrate levels remain consistently below health effect thresholds, EPA requires this notice: "Nitrate in municipal water above 12 ppm presents health risks for infants under six months old. Elevated nitrate can cause blue-baby syndrome. Levels may rise rapidly after rainfall or agricultural activity. If caring for an infant, consult your healthcare provider about water safety."
LEAD AWARENESS: Elevated lead levels pose serious health risks, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in municipal water primarily comes from service line materials and household plumbing components. While WASD provides high-quality water, we cannot control plumbing material variations. After water sits for several hours, minimize lead exposure by flushing taps for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption or cooking. For lead concerns, consider water testing. Information on lead in municipal water, testing options, and exposure reduction is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 or www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

About Miami-Dade County
Miami-Dade County's population reached 2,712,945 in 2016. The county spans over 2,000 square miles - larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined. Notably, one-third of the county lies within Everglades National Park.
Geographic Location

The county includes 34 municipalities with a combined 2010 population of approximately 1,393,480. The City of Miami is the largest, followed by Hialeah, Miami Gardens, Miami Beach, North Miami and Coral Gables.
