The Florida Department of Environmental Protection conducted a Source Water Assessment in 2017 for our water systems. This evaluation identifies potential contamination sources near our wells. For the 1A system, they found three potential contamination sources with low susceptibility levels. The 2A system has nine identified contamination sources, all with low susceptibility ratings.
FDEP also evaluated the City of Hollywood's water supply, which provides water for our 3A and 3B/C systems. This assessment identified thirteen potential contamination sources with low to moderate susceptibility levels. Our water treatment process begins with groundwater treatment using lime and ferric chloride to reduce hardness and color. These chemicals help remove particulates efficiently from the water. After initial treatment, we add fluoride to promote dental health. The water then undergoes filtration to remove any remaining particles. Finally, we disinfect using chloramines (chlorine and ammonia combination) with residual levels maintained throughout the distribution system to prevent microbial growth.
Solids from the treatment process are collected in settling basins where they're thickened before being processed through a filter to remove excess water. Broward County Water and Wastewater Services routinely tests water quality according to all Federal and State regulations. Our NELAP-certified laboratory performs over 15,000 tests annually, while our certified water treatment operators conduct more than 317,500 process control tests each year to ensure safe drinking water compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act.
