The Florida Department of Environmental Protection conducted a Source Water Assessment on our systems in 2017. This assessment identified three potential contamination sources for the 1A system with low susceptibility ratings, and nine sources for the 2A system also with low susceptibility levels.

FDEP also evaluated the Town of Hollywood's water supply (which feeds our 3A and 3B/C systems) in 2017, identifying 13 potential contamination sources with low to moderate susceptibility levels. Assessment results are available at the FDEP Source Water Assessment Protection Program website or by contacting Hollywood Water Quality Division at (954) 921-3414.

Water Treatment Process:

  • Softening: Ground water receives initial treatment with lime and ferric chloride to reduce hardness and color.
  • Fluoridation: Added after softening for enhanced dental protection.
  • Filtration: Removes remaining particulate matter from the treated water.
  • Disinfection: Final stage using chlorine and ammonia (chloramines) with small residual levels maintained throughout the distribution system.
  • Dewatering: Treatment solids are collected, thickened, and processed through vacuum filtration.

Water Quality Monitoring: Broward County Water and Wastewater Services regularly monitors contaminants according to federal and local regulations. Our NELAP-certified water laboratory performs over 15,000 tests annually. Additionally, certified operators conduct more than 317,000 process control tests yearly to ensure our water meets or exceeds all Safe Drinking Water Act requirements.
