About Us
The City of Miramar has implemented several key water system improvement initiatives to better serve residents:
LEAK DETECTION PROGRAM: Miramar's Citywide Water Outflow Detection Program promotes resource efficiency. In 2017, professional contractors surveyed over 85 miles of water infrastructure and thousands of service connections, identifying 220 leaks. City staff promptly repaired all issues, saving approximately 420,000 gallons of water daily.
METER MODERNIZATION: The city's ongoing meter replacement program ensures accurate readings and billing through timely upgrades. New meters feature Automated Meter Reading (AMR) technology, eliminating the need for manual monthly readings. In 2017, 4,000 residential meters and approximately 200 commercial meters were replaced with modern units.
EAST WATER TREATMENT PLANT RENOVATION: After 50+ years of service, the EWTP's lime-softening technology has been upgraded to nanofiltration membrane treatment. The $26 million renovation project, approved in July 2017, will standardize operations with processes already used at the West Water Facility. When completed in September 2019, the upgrade will enhance water quality reliability, improve treatment capacity, and eliminate lime softening byproducts handling in residential areas.
WASTEWATER SYSTEM REHABILITATION: Due to aging infrastructure dating back to the 1950s, Miramar is rehabilitating sewer lines that have reached the end of their useful life. Using innovative trenchless technology, approximately 13,011 linear feet of gravity sewer pipelines were restored between Douglas Road and SW 67th Avenue with minimal disruption to residents and businesses. Additionally, three critical east-side wastewater lift stations were rehabilitated in 2017.
RECLAIMED WATER EXPANSION: Miramar connected two business customers to its reclaimed water distribution system in 2017, totaling 138 acres now irrigated with reclaimed water. This ongoing program promotes conservation, encourages efficient water use, and helps maintain reasonable utility rates. The city collaborates with state and local agencies to promote water reuse and conservation efforts.
HISTORIC MIRAMAR INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADES: In January 2017, construction began in Historic Miramar (east of University Road) to replace over 55,000 feet of undersized water mains with upgraded pipes and new fire hydrants. This project, approximately 80% complete by the end of 2017, will provide residents with increased capacity and improved fire protection when finished in July 2018.
