The City of Newport is pleased to present this year's Annual Water Quality Report. In the past year, your tap water met all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state health standards for municipal water. This report aims to inform you about the quality of your water and the services we provide daily, with our primary goal being to deliver safe, reliable water to all residents.

We continuously strive to improve our treatment processes and protect our valuable water resources. This report fulfills requirements set by the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act and helps residents make informed decisions about their municipal water.

For questions or additional information, please contact Steve Stewart, Plant Supervisor at the Water Treatment Plant (541-574-5871), or Bernard Gross, City Engineer/Director of Public Works (541-574-3366).

Our Water Sources: Newport obtains surface water from two main sources: Big Creek Reservoir and the Siletz River. During summer months, we supplement with water from the Siletz River. The City collaborates with Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality and Health Authority to develop source water assessments identifying potential threats. These assessments are viewable at the Oregon Health Authority Water Program website.

Understanding Contaminants: All water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects is available through the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Certain populations may be more vulnerable to water contaminants, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding their drinking water.

Water Sources and Potential Contaminants: Sources of both tap and bottled water include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity, including:

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and waste systems
  • Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining

To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations set similar standards for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.

City of Newport Municipal Water Report Information

The City of Newport operates under a Council/Manager form of government. Within this structure, the City Council appoints a City Manager who serves as the administrative head of the city and oversees proper management of all municipal operations. Newport's City Council consists of a mayor and six councilors elected from the city at large.

During the first Council meeting each year, members elect a Council President from among themselves. This individual presides in the Mayor's absence and fulfills mayoral duties when the Mayor is unable to perform them. All Council members, including the Mayor, serve as volunteers without compensation for their official responsibilities.

The City Council convenes on the first and third Mondays monthly. Work sessions typically occur at noon, while regular meetings begin at 6:00 P.M. Council packets and audio recordings of meetings are available on the city's website.

At the beginning of each year, the Mayor appoints Committee members to various groups including the Planning Commission, Budget Committee, Retirement Board, Airport Committee, Library Board, Parks and Recreation Committee, 60+ Advisory Committee, Destination Newport Committee, and the Pedestrian/Bicycle Committee. Occasionally, the Mayor may establish task forces or other organizations to address specific community issues.
