About Us
What Do We Monitor In Our Water Supply? The following list represents chemical substances and compounds that we regularly test for in our water system. Most substances are measured in parts per billion (ppb) or parts per million (ppm).
- Volatile Organic Compounds: (21 compounds) Synthetic chemicals including cleaning solvents, degreasers, and plastics.
- Synthetic Organic Compounds: (30 compounds) Man-made chemicals including pesticides and herbicides.
- Inorganic Compounds: (16 compounds) Naturally occurring minerals and elements that may enter water through erosion and mineral deposit leaching.
Cryptosporidium in Untreated Clackamas River Water
Cryptosporidium is a harmful microorganism found in surface water throughout the United States. Two years of monthly monitoring of raw, untreated Clackamas River water began in October 2016:
- 2017: 12 samples collected, 0 had detectable Cryptosporidium.
- 2016: 3 samples collected, 1 had detectable Cryptosporidium Oocysts at 0.1 Oocysts/Liter.
Consistent with historical results, recent testing indicates very low Cryptosporidium occurrence. Our water treatment process includes coagulation, settling, ozonation, and filtration specifically optimized for Cryptosporidium removal.
Sources of Contaminants
To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulatory limits on contaminants in public water systems. The FDA sets similar limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection. Drinking water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material.

In accordance with the Lake Oswego City Charter, the City Manager is appointed by the City Council to implement board policies and serve as the chief administrative officer. The City Manager oversees city operations and executes Council policies by:
- Coordinating all City departments and employee activities
- Enforcing city ordinances and implementing Council policies
- Administering approved expenditures
- Providing recommendations to Council on legislation, financial programs, capital improvements, and other matters
- Keeping Council informed about city operations and financial conditions
- Managing personnel appointments and removals (subject to union contract provisions)
- Investigating and addressing community complaints
The City Manager is one of three appointed Charter Officers in Lake Oswego, alongside the City Attorney and Municipal Judge. All serve at the Council's discretion and are appointed or removed by majority Council vote. Compensation for appointed officers is determined by Council direction (Charter, Section 12).
