City of Roma Municipal Water Report Info
In November 1993, the 9-square-area surrounding Roma Plaza was designated as a National Historic Landmark District, the highest recognition available for historic properties in the United States.

Tracing its origins to Spanish Colonial settlers in the 1760s, Roma preserves physical evidence spanning over two centuries of Texas/México borderlands heritage. The town's early foundation was established during the Spanish colonial period. In 1746, José de Escandón received authorization from the Spanish Crown to colonize Nuevo Santander, which stretched from the Sierra Madre Oriental to the Gulf of México and from Tamaulipas rainforests northward beyond the Rio Grande.

By 1753, Escandón had established Camargo, Reynosa, Revilla, and Mier south of the Rio Grande, with Dolores on the north bank, followed by Laredo in 1755. The Roma National Historic Landmark District encompasses more than 30 structures built before 1900, each standing as a testament to the pioneering spirit of Spanish Colonial and Mexican settlers and the subsequent prosperity Roma enjoyed as a vital commercial center for this region of the Texas/México borderlands.
