City of Santa Barbara Water Department
About Us
Santa Barbara is currently in its seventh consecutive year of severe drought. Fortunately, through strategic water management and sound guidance from the City Council, Santa Barbara has developed a diverse water portfolio capable of meeting customer needs through 2020.
Our water sources include:
- Surface water from Lake Cachuma and Gibraltar Reservoir
- State water conveyed through Lake Cachuma
- Local groundwater
- Charles E. Meyer Desalination Plant (operational since May 2017)
Despite some rainfall this past winter and spring, precipitation only reached 50% of normal annual levels, leaving Lake Cachuma at just 40% capacity. Gibraltar Reservoir faces additional challenges from Thomas Fire ash and debris contamination, while years of heavy pumping have significantly depleted our groundwater reserves.
Santa Barbara residents have responded admirably to conservation efforts, often exceeding the 30% reduction goal, which has helped preserve our limited supplies. Current annual citywide water usage consistently remains below 12,000 acre-feet per year – matching 1958 consumption levels when our population was only half its current size.
The desalination plant is permitted to produce up to 10,500 acre-feet per year (AFY) but currently operates at 3,125 AFY capacity, meeting approximately 30% of community water demands. If conditions worsen, the City is prepared to expand plant capacity to ensure adequate water supplies.
We encourage residents to continue their conservation efforts. The City's Water Conservation Program offers free Water Assessments, rebates, garden workshops, educational videos, and more. Visit www.SantaBarbaraCA.gov/WaterWise or call (805) 564-5460 for details.
