- How does municipal water compare to bottled water? Our municipal water meets rigorous quality standards. We test for more chemicals than federal and state regulations require. Bottled water faces less stringent standards. Independent studies show some bottled water isn't as advertised - much actually comes from municipal systems. Bottled water also generates significant plastic waste. Cost-wise, we deliver 1,000 gallons to your tap for approximately the price of one gallon of bottled water.
- How much of my tax money goes to the Water District? None - all operational funding comes from water sales.
- What's the account setup fee? There's a $20 fee to establish a new account.
- What are the water costs? Current rates are $.014002 per cubic foot with a $21.25 quarterly base fee.
- Is there a meter removal charge? Yes, there's a $25 fee for meter removal.
- Why do I sometimes get rust-colored water? What appears as rust is actually iron, a naturally occurring element especially common along Long Island's South Shore. Iron is invisible in water until it mixes with air and chlorine. While unappealing in appearance, it's not harmful. Iron sediment in water mains may be disturbed when hydrants are opened.
- What additives are in my water? Suffolk County Water Authority adds minimal chlorine to eliminate potential germs in the distribution system. New York State mandates chlorine treatment. We also add lime to counteract the natural acidity of groundwater, which protects your home's plumbing from corrosion damage.
- Where does my water originate? The Smithtown & St James Water Districts purchase water wholesale from the Suffolk County Water Authority.
