Substances That May Be Present In Tap Water: Sources of water (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land surfaces or through underground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials. It can also pick up substances resulting from animal or human activities.

To ensure tap water safety, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and State Water Resources Control Board establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations set limits for contaminants in bottled water, providing comparable public health protection.

All water sources, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Potential contaminants include:

  • Microbial Contaminants: Viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic Contaminants: Salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and Herbicides: From agricultural sources, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic Chemical Contaminants: Synthetic and volatile organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive Contaminants: Naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining activities

For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

City of Wasco Municipal Water Report Information

About Wasco: The City of Wasco's mission is to provide cost-effective, value-driven services to residents while partnering with community organizations to promote safety, harmony, stability, quality of life, economic and educational opportunities, and community pride.

Wasco's history dates to 1897 when the Santa Fe Railroad established tracks through the area. Over the next few years, more than 300 families relocated to the region through arrangements made by Marshall V. Hartranft, who acquired nine 640-acre sections from the Kern County Land Company for resettlement. His initiative bringing settlers to Wasco was known as the "Fourth Home Extension Colony."

Initially named "Dewey" and then "Deweyville," the town was renamed "Wasco" in 1900 when settler William Bonham, originally from Wasco County in Oregon, discovered another town already called "Deweyville." By 1904, local schools consolidated as "Delta-Shamrock School," later renamed "Wasco" and combining with Elmo District in 1919 to form the Wasco School District.

Early Wasco featured a business district with a depot, general store, post office, two saloons, a blacksmith shop, and hotel. The community's development included the establishment of its first church in 1907, along with King Lumber Company and the Wasco Improvement Club, which focused on planting shade trees and acquiring firefighting equipment.

Agriculture has always been Wasco's economic foundation. Long white potatoes became the cornerstone of the local economy when introduced in 1916, followed by cotton in 1918. The town was officially incorporated in 1945. For more historical information, contact the Wasco Historical Society at 758-8948 or visit their museum at 918 6th Street.
