About Us
To ensure tap water safety, the USEPA and State Water Solutions Control Board establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. State regulations also set similar standards for bottled water to maintain public health protection.
The City of Porterville regularly tests water at all 34 municipal well sites and numerous distribution points throughout the system to meet state and federal standards. Before distribution, a disinfectant is added to protect against potential microbial contamination.
A 2002 assessment of Porterville's water sources identified six wells vulnerable to PCE contamination, seven vulnerable to nitrate contamination, and one to DBCP contamination. However, none of these constituents were detected above regulatory standards. The complete assessment is available at the City Corporation yard on North Prospect Street.
We conduct mandatory regular monitoring for specific contaminants. For additional water quality information, please contact Michael Knight at 782-7518. Concerns can also be addressed at Porterville City Council meetings, held at 6:30 PM on the first and third Tuesdays monthly at City Hall (291 N. Main Street). Property owners with tenants should distribute copies of this report to them.
Municipal water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive material, and can pick up substances from animal or human activity. Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria)
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals)
- Pesticides and herbicides from various sources
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes and petroleum production
- Naturally occurring radioactive contaminants
Important Reminder for Aquarium Owners and Dialysis Patients: Our water contains chlorine to meet USEPA regulations. Aquarium owners should remove chlorine with appropriate water conditioning treatments. Dialysis patients should consult their doctor or technician to ensure equipment properly removes chlorine.
Special Health Considerations: Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Immune-compromised persons, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants may face increased risk. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about municipal water consumption.
Definitions:
- AL (Action Level): Contaminant concentration that triggers treatment requirements
- MCL (Maximum Contaminant Level): Highest allowable contaminant level in municipal water
- MCLG (Maximum Contaminant Level Goal): Contaminant level below which no health risk is expected
- ND (Non-Detected): Constituent not detectable in sample
- PHG (Public Health Goal): Contaminant level with no known or expected health risks

City of Porterville Municipal Water Company and EPAThe EPA establishes and enforces national drinking water standards to protect public health. They monitor contaminants, provide guidance on water treatment techniques, and help communities maintain safe municipal water supplies.
