The City of Santa Clara obtains water from two primary sources: deep municipal wells and purchased water from regional systems. The well water comes from groundwater aquifers – underground water-filled zones between layers of sand, gravel, silt, and clay. These aquifers are naturally replenished by rainfall that percolates through surface soil.

The City also purchases water from the SFPUC Hetch Hetchy System. SFPUC conducts annual watershed sanitary surveys for the Hetch Hetchy source and evaluates local water sources every five years.
