Many homeowners don't realize that common household setups can potentially contaminate the municipal water supply. Even something as simple as a garden hose left in a pool creates a cross connection that risks polluting your drinking water.

Recently, a section of Wenatchee's water system was contaminated with Reclamation District water from an irrigation canal. Unlike treated city water, irrigation water flows through open channels without chlorination and isn't suitable for human consumption.

The contamination originated from a residence with a garden sprinkler system designed to use either irrigation or City water. Though the home had a backflow prevention valve, it was incorrectly installed. The issue went undetected because the homeowner didn't have the installation inspected by the City or schedule annual testing to verify proper operation.

When a neighbor noticed unusual odor and yellowish tint in their water, they promptly contacted the City. Officials responded by:

  • Immediately shutting off water to the source property
  • Flushing all water mains in the area by opening fire hydrants
  • Testing to determine contamination spread
  • Advising affected residents to flush their home plumbing systems
  • Implementing a 48-hour boil water advisory for drinking and food preparation

Water samples initially showed bacterial presence, but all tests after flushing confirmed the water was safe. To prevent similar issues, Wenatchee maintains a cross-connection control program. For information about eliminating cross connections from lawn sprinklers, fountains, or fire systems, call (509) 888-3227.
