Currently, high levels of lead can pose serious health risks, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water primarily comes from materials associated with service lines and household plumbing. West Virginia American Water ensures quality water delivery but cannot control materials used in plumbing components. We implement preventative measures by adding corrosion inhibitors to water leaving our treatment facilities.

You can reduce potential lead exposure by running your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes after water has been sitting for several hours before using it for cooking or drinking. If concerned about lead, consider having your water tested. Information about lead in water, testing methods, and exposure reduction steps is available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http//www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Water Hardness: Hardness measures calcium and magnesium concentration naturally present in water. Our hardness levels range between 24-66 ppm or 1-4 grains per gallon.

Sodium Content: The sodium level is approximately 10.4 ppm (or mg/L).

Water pH: Distribution system water averages 6.6 pH units. A pH of 7.0 is neutral, neither acidic nor alkaline.

Fluoride: West Virginia American Water adds fluoride to approximately 0.67 ppm to help prevent dental cavities.

Partnership for Safe Water Program: West Virginia American Water participates in the National Partnership for Safe Water (a utility and government association) committed to providing water quality exceeding federal requirements. Our facility completed self-assessment in 2010 and received the "Director's Award" from the US EPA administrator. The Weston Facility has maintained Partnership Program goals for fifteen consecutive years since winning the initial award.

Water Source: West Virginia American Water and Weston District customers benefit from the abundant West Fork River water supply. The treatment plant provided approximately 549,000,000 gallons of clean water in 2018. Learn more about our watershed at the U.S. EPA's Search Your Watershed at www.epa.gov/owow/.

The West Fork River begins in Upshur County and flows north through Clarksburg, joining the Tygart River near Fairmont. Discover more about the West Fork River and local waterways at https://watersgeo.epa.gov/mywaterway.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources completed a source water assessment of West Fork Lake in April 2003 to meet Safe Drinking Water Act requirements. The study examined the drainage area and assessed contamination vulnerability, rating it high because the West Fork River is a surface water body exposed above ground. For assessment copies, contact DHHR at (304) 356-4298 or visit https://www.wvdhhr.org/oehs/eed/swap.
