We're pleased to present our 2017 Water Quality Report. This yearly document is designed to inform residents about the quality water and services we deliver daily. Our primary mission is to provide you with safe, dependable water. We want to share the efforts we make to continuously improve water quality and protect our valuable water resources.

We monitor your municipal water for specific contaminants on a regular schedule. Testing results help determine whether your water meets health standards. This report shows only those substances detected in your water, though we test for many more contaminants that were not found.

The public is welcome to participate in Board of Public Works meetings at 5:30 PM on the 1st Monday after the 1st and 3rd Tuesday monthly in City Hall Council Chambers. Meeting agendas are available on the city website.

Since 1996, Chippewa Falls has been recognized as a Groundwater Guardian Community. Our Groundwater Guardian activities focus on community groundwater protection through education, pollution prevention, public policy, conservation, and quality management practices. Contact the Utility Office to join our Groundwater Team or participate in activities.

Did you know? Our system includes 495,272 feet of water main serving 856 hydrants and 5,860 meters throughout the City. In 2017, we pumped 904,500,000 gallons to our four water towers. The East tower holds 1 million gallons, the West tower 750,000, and both the South and Southeast towers hold 500,000 gallons each.

Chippewa Falls relies exclusively on groundwater from wells for its municipal supply. These wells range from 53 to 97 feet deep, tapping into a sand and gravel aquifer. The West Well Field includes three wells located at 555 and 575 Tilton Road and 1821 Nelson Road. The East Well Field contains six wells at 1350 Pumphouse Road. For a source water assessment summary, contact Matt Boos at 715-726-2741.

Where Does Our Water Come From?

Sources of tap water and bottled water include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances from animal or human activity.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants including salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, mining or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining

To ensure tap water safety, EPA regulations limit certain contaminants in public water systems. FDA regulations establish similar limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.
