As Rutherford County has developed over the decades, the need for reliable utilities has grown exponentially. Safe municipal water remains essential for any developing region, a fact well-recognized by local leadership throughout the years.
In the early 1960s, four separate utility districts were established across Rutherford County: Stones River, Florence, Double Springs, and Rockvale. A significant merger occurred on October 1st, 1968, when Double Springs and Stones River Utility Districts combined to form Consolidated Utility District of Rutherford County. Shortly thereafter, Florence and Rockvale joined the consolidated district, with Eagleville Water Department becoming part of CUD in the mid-1990s.
The 1970s brought completion of Interstate 24 and the utilization of J. Percy Priest Lake for hydroelectric production and recreation. The lake would eventually serve another crucial purpose for both Rutherford and Wilson Counties as businesses and industry entered the region, placing greater demands on water systems.
In 1978, the Board of Commissioners authorized development plans for a water treatment plant using J. Percy Priest Lake as its source. With grants and loans from Farmers Home Administration, the K. Thomas Hutchinson Water Treatment Plant began operations in 1981 with a capacity of 4 million gallons daily. Following several expansions and upgrades, the facility will ultimately reach a capacity of 32 million gallons per day.
Our Board of Commissioners consists of five members, all customers themselves. Current Board Members include President: Mr. John L. Batey Jr., Vice President: Dr. Rosemary Owens, Secretary: Mr. Craig Lynch, Mr. Carter Woodruff, and Ms. Lynnisse Roehrich-Patrick. Advisory Members include Mr. Hassel Smith, III, Mr. Chip Pinion, and Mr. Allen Swader. The district's legal counsel is provided by Mr. Jeff Reed and Mr. Roger Hudson.
Our mission remains focused on providing safe municipal water to all residents within the Consolidated Utility District service area at the most reasonable cost possible for our customers.
