Smyrna is located approximately 10 miles northwest of Atlanta, Georgia and is considered an essential part of the Metro Atlanta area. Known as the "Jonquil City," this nickname comes from thousands of jonquils that bloom in gardens and along streets in early spring.
Incorporated in 1872, Smyrna operates under a government with Mayor and Council members representing seven wards. Citizens elect the Mayor and Council for four-year terms, and the governing body appoints a City Administrator as the chief administrative officer.
Covering roughly 15 square miles, Smyrna has evolved into a vital and dynamic member of the regional landscape. Just a 15-minute drive from downtown Atlanta, it maintains its own distinct character with a revitalized downtown featuring a library, community center, retail developments, mixed-use properties, city hall and charming homes.
The community offers numerous amenities including parks, running trails, pools, tennis courts, public golf courses, and recreational activities for all ages. Summer concerts and family events downtown enhance quality of life, and the city has won the prestigious Urban Land Institute's Award of Excellence.
More than 50,000 residents call Smyrna home, making this area of Cobb County continuously attractive for residential development. Demographics show residents are younger with higher per capita income compared to the Atlanta MSA. Neighborhoods are diverse in style and enriched with community spirit.
The proximity to the Cumberland-Galleria employment center continues to attract both residents and businesses. Retail and commercial opportunities expand with residential growth, with Smyrna actively recruiting specialty shops, restaurants and national operators. The city has identified needs for additional office and professional space for small business ventures.
Within Smyrna's 15 square miles, residents find 304 acres of park and green space, including 33 acres within one mile of downtown. The downtown area features a well-equipped Community Center with two gymnasiums and exercise equipment, a scenic lake with koi fish, and abundant trees. Recreational facilities exist throughout the city with park space available for special events.
The 20th Century Veterans Memorial stands in the beautiful downtown area, adjacent to the first city-owned public library of its kind in Georgia and a modern playground. The two largest sections of downtown—the Village Green and Market Village—serve as models of renewal and redevelopment for other cities.
With visionary leadership and strong community spirit, Smyrna has become one of the most popular places to live in the metro-Atlanta area. The "community" atmosphere combined with a progressive approach in local government offers the modern lifestyle many seek when deciding where to raise their families.
