Durant Municipal Water Report Background

Originally, a French-Choctaw group led the migration of the Choctaw Nation from the Mississippi River Valley. This journey, similar to the Cherokee's "Trail of Tears" marked by suffering and loss, concluded in a new territory west of Arkansas between the Red River to the south and the South Canadian River to the north. This area extended westward to Mexico, now forming eastern boundary of northwest Texas's "panhandle."

Pierre Durant (pronounced DuRant in French) and his four sons traveled down the Mississippi toward the southeastern Choctaw Nation in 1832. The brothers, with their own families, established properties from the Arkansas border to Durant. One son, Fisher, who married a full-blood Choctaw woman, selected a beautiful homesite between what is now Durant's Eighth and Ninth Avenues.

Fisher's son, Dixon Durant, is recognized as Durant's founder. As an early minister, physician and civic leader, Dixon Durant established local Presbyterian, Congregationalist and Methodist congregations; opened the first general merchandise store; and likely influenced the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (Katy Railroad) to build a siding at Durant in 1872, providing the initial spark for community development.
