About Us
Muskogee enjoys access to plentiful fresh water resources. Our primary municipal water source is Fort Gibson Lake, maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This impressive 51,500-acre reservoir stores 1,284 acre-feet of water along the Grand River, serving not only Muskogee but also Fort Gibson and Wagoner communities.
Annually, Muskogee utilizes approximately 4.5 billion gallons (13,800 acre-feet) of water. As the region's primary water provider, Muskogee supplies neighboring communities including Haskell, Taft, Porter, and six rural water districts, serving a combined population exceeding 55,500 residents.
Our treatment process includes oxidation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, fluoridation, and disinfection. The treated water is stored in multiple elevated reservoirs until distribution. On average, our plant processes and distributes 14.5 million gallons daily.

Why are there contaminants in my tap water?
All water sources, including bottled water, naturally contain some level of contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can collect substances from animal presence or human activity, including:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from natural sources, urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations set limits for bottled water, both ensuring public health protection.
